Brief Overview of Conflict Diamonds

Diamonds illegally traded to fund conflict against legitimate and internationally recognized governments are known as “conflict diamonds.” The diamond industry, as well as various governments, became increasingly concerned about the grave human suffering being caused by these rebel organizations. The industry in partnership with the United Nations, governments, and non-governmental organizations recognized the clear moral obligation to act swiftly on this issue and have come together to form a united front in the campaign to stop the trade of conflict diamonds. Through measures such as the Kimberley Process, which tracks diamonds from where they are mined to the end market, we can now prevent the trade of illegal “conflict” diamonds.

About the Kimberley Process

The Kimberley Process is a process designed to certify the origin of diamonds from sources which are free of conflict. Introduced at the end of November 2002, the process has two important elements: the Kimberley Process Certification--an international system of certification of all import and export of rough diamonds, and the System of Warranties—which legally obligates members of the diamond industry to provide a written warranty on all invoices for rough diamonds, polished diamonds, and diamond jewelry stating that the diamonds are conflict-free.
